Cymtec Systems Unveils Pioneering Appliance for Unified Network Security and Performance Management in Remote and Branch Offices

February 11, 2008

St. Louis, Mo. – February 11 – Cymtec Systems today launched Cymtec Sentry 2.0®, the first network security and performance appliance to reliably and effectively guard business continuity at both single and multiple remote and branch offices. Simple to use and maintain, and with the industry’s lowest cost of ownership, Cymtec Sentry 2.0 delivers innovative anti-malware detection, anti-virus protection, policy enforcement, web filtering, traffic shaping, and QoS.

Top analyst firms report that 75 percent of enterprises will become infected with financially motivated, targeted malware that evades their perimeter and host defenses. Unfortunately however, many organizations concentrate their security efforts on the core of the network. This leaves remote and branch offices vulnerable to attack. Cymtec Sentry 2.0 supplements core network security products. It fills the security and performance gap left by traditional firewalls, intrusion detection systems, IPS, and anti-virus software that focus only on preventing the initial attack.

This landmark product:

  • Is simple for even novice network administrators to use
  • Works with near-zero deployment and operational costs
  • Significantly improves the performance of vital business applications
  • Dramatically lowers WAN costs through improved bandwidth provisioning and traffic shaping

Tim Pyatt is IT Director at Armstrong Teasdale, a St. Louis, Mo.-based law firm with 13 offices in the U.S. and overseas. Pyatt explained, “Branch offices have always been considered stepchildren. Cymtec Sentry changes that. As soon as we plugged it in, Cymtec Sentry pointed out dozens of infected computers that were trying to spread an infection. With Cymtec Sentry the time we spend on spyware issues has dropped from 35 percent to an afterthought.”

At the heart of Cymtec Sentry 2.0 is a unique Dynamic Threat Protection (DTP) Engine that raises the bar in network security.  The Cymtec Sentry 2.0 DTP Engine is the first to integrate multiple best-of-breed detection engines into a single appliance. It combines the power of Webroot Software’s RockSafe® and Secure Computing's SmartFilter to keep the workplace free from offensive content, limit legal liability, manage bandwidth, and protect against security risks like spyware and malware.

“There is a growing need for multi-layered network security at the perimeter of the branch or remote office,” said Mike Irwin, COO of Webroot Software. “Companies face a constantly evolving threat landscape. Together Webroot Software and Cymtec Systems offer vital protection at the outer layer of the network.”
Cymtec Sentry 2.0 DTP Engine capabilities include:

  • Anti-malware Protection – heuristics-based detection; multi-list URL block technique; binary file scanning
  • Web Filtering – category-based filtering; reputation-based filtering; multi-language support; custom category support; custom block pages; IP based whitelisting
  • Anti-virus Protection – InStream STMP scanning; compressed file scanning with built-in support for various archive formats including Zip, RAR, Tar and Gzip; signatures; major file type scanning; ELF file support
  • Patent-pending Propagation Protection – with advanced botnet protection; vulnerability analysis; ability to initiate TCP reset and block
  • Application Control – with IM access control; P2P file sharing; web mail; streaming access control
  • Traffic Analysis – detailed traffic analysis; including protocol analysis; on-appliance reporting; PCAP file creation
  • Quality of Service – with guaranteed bandwidth; maximum bandwidth; ingress traffic policing; priority-bandwidth utilization; classification support.

Commenting on these capabilities, another Cymtec Systems customer, Jeffrey M. Nolle, Manager of Technical Services at Home Decorators Collection, a subsidiary of The Home Depot (NYSE:HD), said, “We looked at managed solutions from other vendors but they didn’t give us the same control and low cost of ownership. Cymtec Sentry’s traffic shaping, compliance, network security and performance are excellent. Cymtec Sentry can catch a virus just as it is introduced so you can squash it before it spreads. It’s like having someone constantly watching your front door.”

Cymtec Sentry 2.0 works with a centralized, web-based Management Console that is easy even for non-professional network managers to navigate. Console capabilities include automatic updates, centralized reporting and encrypted management traffic. The centralized Management Console provides complete viewing, reporting, administration and configuration capabilities, whether one or 100 appliances are deployed.

Neeraj Rajpal, CIO of international law firm Bryan Cave LLP, said, “Central management was a key factor in our decision to use Cymtec Sentry 2.0 because our global network is managed from a central location in the US.”

“Our mission is to deliver the industry’s only robust product for securing and managing the small, remote and branch office environment; whether one or 1,000 locations,” said Andrew Rubin, Cymtec Systems Co-Founder, President and CEO. “Cymtec Sentry 2.0 is rapidly gaining ground as an essential business continuity product because it offers an easy, cost-effective, seamless customer experience. What has all of us most excited is that our customers in a variety of industries are strongly endorsing our products and our services.”
